Trastevere food tours with dietary needs

Roman food leans on pork, cheese and wheat, so dietary needs take some planning. Here is what each Trastevere tour says it can and cannot do.

Vegetarian Roman dishes: fried artichoke, zucchini flowers, bruschetta, cacio e pepe and pizza bianca
Plenty of Roman classics are naturally vegetarian.

Booking choice: The Twilight Trastevere Food Tour, from $121 per person. Check dates Compare the options below

Many of Rome's classics are vegetarian already: cacio e pepe, fried artichokes, zucchini flowers, pizza bianca and gelato. Vegan and celiac-safe eating is harder, because so much of the menu is built on cheese and wheat.

The rules below come from each tour's Viator listing and Eating Europe's own page in 2026. Always tell the operator when you book, not on the night.

The quick answer

Vegetarians can join most Trastevere tours with notice. Gluten-free and vegan guests have fewer options: Eating Europe says they may be limited, Devour adapts for gluten-free but not celiacs or vegans, and Carpe Diem and Secret Food Tours cannot do gluten-free. No tour here suits severe or life-threatening allergies.

Which Trastevere tours cater for which diets?

Vegetarian is widely accepted; gluten-free and vegan are the hard cases.

Can vegetarians do the Twilight Trastevere Food Tour?

Yes, usually: email Eating Europe or add a note when you book, and the meat tastings are swapped.

Eating Europe describes its tours as vegetarian-friendly. The pasta course can be cacio e pepe, and supplì, pizza bianca, fried vegetables and gelato are meat-free in their classic forms.

Pizza al taglio comes in plenty of meat-free versions.

Can gluten-free travelers join?

With care: Eating Europe says gluten-free options may be limited, Devour adapts for gluten-free but not celiacs, and Carpe Diem and Secret Food Tours cannot cater for it.

Cross-contamination is the issue in small kitchens that fry supplì and bake pizza all day. If you are celiac, a private tour arranged with the operator is safer than a group tour.

Is there a vegan Trastevere food tour?

Not among the group tours here: Eating Europe says vegan options may be limited and Devour does not recommend its tour for vegans.

Gourmetaly offers a private option for vegans. Otherwise, look for dedicated vegan food tours in Rome rather than adapting a cheese-heavy menu.

What about severe food allergies?

Not suitable: Eating Europe says guests with severe or life-threatening allergies cannot take part, and other operators ask for waivers or exclude certain allergens.

Gourmetaly lists milk, eggs, soy, mustard, nuts and gluten as possible allergens, and says guests with allergies to nuts, legumes or soy cannot participate.

Shared kitchens make allergen control hard.

Can you join if you do not drink alcohol?

Yes on the Twilight tour, which offers alternatives for non-drinkers; Devour does not recommend its sunset tour if you do not drink.

The price is the same whether or not you drink, so a wine-led tour is poor value for non-drinkers.

How do you tell the operator?

Add a note at checkout and email the operator straight after booking, giving the exact restriction.

Say "vegetarian, eats dairy and eggs" rather than just "vegetarian", and repeat it to the guide at the meeting point.

Which tour should you book?

Vegetarians: the Twilight tour or Devour. Gluten-free (not celiac): Devour. Vegan or celiac: a private tour.

Can pregnant women do a Trastevere food tour?

Do I pay less if I am vegetarian?

No. Prices are the same; the operator swaps the tastings.
